Just a bit of advice for all you moms out there, or even you future moms...
KEEP ALL PILLS OFF THE COUNTER AND AWAY FROM THE KIDS!!!
I'm sure that is commonsense to all of you, but apparently I forgot this little lesson.
Let me set the scene for you...Morning, sunny day. I am checking my email in the bedroom, Case is at work. I make a phone call or two to deal with some family business and go into the kitchen to check on the kids and see what they are doing. What do I find? An empty bottle of children's vitamins, and an open bottle of Cases allergy medicine (Zyrtec), and Jeremy staring at me looking guilty. I of course freak! Upon further questioning I discover that Jeremy ate the "Yummies". My first reaction is to give him IPECAC Syrup, and then I instant message the husband. I'm MAD at this point. After chatting with him for approx 5 seconds, I call poison control.
The very nice lady there informs me that I should probably take him to the emergency room, and of course, while I am talking to her, Jeremy pukes all over the kitchen and the carpet in the hallway. By the way, did you know if you feed your kids Craisens and they puke that it stains? Well, I just threw him into the tub to clean the puke off him, by this time Case is home and gets him dressed for me while I put on some clothes, I was still in my jammies, and we were off the the emergency room, leaving the puke for later.
Just to shorten this up a little, we found out that he probably only took like 1 Zyrtec, but 10-15 children's vitamins. They were iron free vitamins, which is a very good thing, and that saved us a stomach pumping and lots of x-rays and a hospital stay, and water soluble, which saved us more blood tests. What we did get to do is feed my 2 year old activated charcoal. NOT FUN!!
Activated charcoal looks like black paint. It looks gross, it tastes gross, and kids do not like to drink it. Our options were however, feed it to him ourselves or they put a tube down his throat and make him drink it. Either way NOT FUN!! So, medicine dropper in hand, Case held him down and every time he would scream or cry I would squirt a little in his mouth and he would swallow it. We continued this until drank about a cup of the foul stuff.
2 1/2 to 3 hours later we were all done and on our way home to dried up, red, smelly puke to clean up, but with a happy and healthy little boy in tow. Not a fun day, but it make a great story to tell. Come over sometime and I will show you the stains in my carpet and we can relive it together. We just chalk it up as another adventure in having kids. With a medical bill as a souvenir.
You will all be happy to know that now ALL medications, vitamins, and Craisens are out of kid reach and locked up. Fun stuff!
